Nighthawks center fielder Alex Kelsey committed to the University of Kentucky on Monday to continue his academic and baseball career next season, according to a post on his Instagram account.
“It just felt like home,” Kelsey said. “Got there, [and] it was just easy to connect [with the coaches] and just ultimately led to that decision.”
Playing for St. Joseph’s this spring, Kelsey slashed .373/.489/.507 and posted a .996 OPS. Kelsey’s performance earned him a spot on the A-10 All-Conference First Team. The speedster also went 22 for 26 on stolen base attempts.
Kelsey also fielded offers from Clemson and Texas Christian University but said that he felt the Kentucky staff stood out with their plan for his development.
“They just have everything for you,” Kelsey said. “[Nutrition] program, weight program. You need to gain weight, you need to get better, they got it for you. They just had the blueprint for me, and they had everything planned out.”
In three games for the Nighthawks so far this season, Kelsey has reached base at a .400 clip while making six putouts in center field.
Now that the recruiting process is complete, Kelsey can focus entirely on having a successful summer.
“Now I can just take that deep breath, relax and play for the rest of the summer,” Kelsey said. “Ball out with these guys and get us back to that winning culture.”
